An original large-format Fernand Leger L'Art en Europe St Etienne 1988 original vintage museum exhibition poster published in 1987 by the elite French art publisher Adrien Maeght and pressed by Imprimerie Arte in Paris. This rare collectible was produced to announce the historical winter exhibition "L'Art en Europe: Les années décisives, 1945-1953" (Art in Europe: The Decisive Years), which ran from December 10, 1987, to February 24, 1988, to mark the grand opening season of the newly inaugurated Musée d'Art Moderne de Saint-Étienne.
The poster prominently showcases a brilliant, authorized lithographic reproduction of the iconic 1950 Cubist-Realist masterpiece Les Constructeurs (The Builders) by the legendary French avant-garde master Fernand Leger. The graphic features a dynamic group of modern industrial steelworkers scaling a towering grid of metal beams, scaffolds, and ladders against an open blue sky filled with stylized white clouds. Framed by a thick, midnight-black border and striking, clean white institutional typography, this piece represents the pinnacle of late 20th-century French museum graphic design. Its structural lines, vibrant color blocks, and profound socio-historical weight make it a compelling visual centerpiece for modern, industrial loft, or mid-century modern interior spaces.
About the Artist
Fernand Leger (1881–1955) was a monumental French painter, sculptor, and filmmaker who fundamentally transformed modern art by bridging Cubism with the imagery of the industrial age. Developing his signature style known as "Tubism," Leger celebrated the rhythmic vitality of modern life, machines, factories, and the working class through bold primary colors, heavy black outlines, and cylindrical, mechanized human forms. Disillusioned by elite bourgeois abstraction, his post-war works—such as his famous Builders series—sought to create an accessible, epic visual language honoring the collective strength and dignity of everyday laborers.
