An original mid-sized vintage exhibition poster published in 1989 by the renowned Italian art publisher Edizioni Charta / Mazzotta Poster. This rare collectible was produced for the major summer exhibition "Da Van Gogh a Schiele - L'Europa espressionista 1880-1918" (From Van Gogh to Schiele - Expressionist Europe), held from July 7 to October 10, 1989, at the historic Palazzo Forti in Verona, Italy.
The poster features a magnificent reproduction of the 1912 Expressionist masterpiece Il cavallino blu (The Little Blue Horse) by the legendary German avant-garde pioneer Franz Marc, on loan from the permanent collection of the Saarland-Museum in Saarbrücken, Germany. The top right corner retains a printed detail of Marc's handwritten German dedication inscription. Marc’s iconic composition utilizes a highly spiritualized color scheme, contrasting a radiant blue horse against a vibrant background of fiery red, rolling yellow hills, and green fauna. Set within a clean white border with minimalist Italian typography, this piece is a striking design asset, bringing intense color warmth and deep historical resonance to modern, mid-century modern, or eclectic homes.
About the Artist
Franz Marc (1880–1916) was a towering figure of German Expressionism and a co-founder of the highly influential avant-garde collective Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) alongside Wassily Kandinsky. Deeply spiritual and disillusioned by the modern industrial world, Marc turned away from human subjects to focus almost exclusively on animals, which he viewed as symbols of primal innocence and cosmic harmony. He developed a highly sophisticated system of color symbolism—where blue represented masculinity and spirituality, yellow denoted feminine joy, and red signified the heavy gravity of matter. His career was tragically cut short during World War I, but his radical approach to abstraction and emotional color theory remains a cornerstone of modern art history.
