About the Artist:
Isaac Frenel (Frenkel) (1899–1981), born in Odessa, immigrated to Israel in 1919. A key member of the French School of Artists, he designed sets and costumes for the Habima and Ohel theaters. After abandoning abstraction in the 1930s, he became a leading figure in Israeli expressionism. In 1960, he established his home and museum in Safed, where he lived until his death.

עבודה אקספרסיוניסטית מקורית מאת יצחק פרנל, המתארת שביל הנשקף מגבעה לעבר העיר. לאחר תקופת האוונגרד והמופשט המוקדמת שלו בשנות ה-20, יצירה זו משקפת את המעבר של פרנל ב-1934 לסגנון "אסכולת פריז". הקומפוזיציה עושה שימוש בקווים עזים ובצבעוניות חיונית ללכידת האווירה של הנוף המקומי, נושא מרכזי ביצירתו המאוחרת.
על האמן:
יצחק פרנל (פרנקל) (1981-1899), יליד אודסה, עלה לישראל ב-1919. היה חבר בולט ב"אסכולת פריז" ועיצב תפאורות ותלבושות עבור תיאטראות "הבימה" ו"אוהל". לאחר שזנח את הסגנון המופשט בשנות ה-30, הפך לאחת הדמויות המשפיעות באקספרסיוניזם הישראלי. ב-1960 הקים את ביתו ומוזיאון הנושא את שמו בצפת.
