About the Artist
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was a towering pioneer of German Expressionism and one of the core founding members of the revolutionary artists' group Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Dresden. Driven by a desire to bridge historical art traditions with modern emotional expression, Kirchner rejected academic structure in favor of raw, angular woodcut-like contours, flat perspectives, and non-naturalistic, highly psychological color palettes. His art captured the restless energy, tension, and psychological landscape of pre-war German city life, cafes, and street scenes, cementing his legacy as one of the most daring and influential figures of early 20th-century modern art history.
