Nahum Kook (1908–1978) was a prominent Jaffa-born painter and illustrator whose vibrant works occupy a unique place in the history of early Israeli modernism. As a completely self-taught (autodidact) artist, Kook developed a highly intuitive and uninhibited visual language. His early career was defined by atmospheric and expressive depictions of local Middle Eastern life, utilizing bold gouache and oil applications to capture the region’s shifting light, bustling towns, and desert landscapes.
