About the Artist
Rachel Shavit (1929–2022), also known as Rachel Shavit-Bentwich, was a prominent Israeli painter, draftsman, and art educator. Born into the historic Bentwich family, she studied at the New Bezalel School in Jerusalem and the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv. Shavit co-founded the influential "Aklim" (Climate) art group in 1973 alongside Eliyahu Gat, championing a localized visual style rooted in the bright light and intense colors of the Mediterranean landscape. Throughout her long career, she served as chairperson of the Tel Aviv Artists and Sculptors Association and exhibited extensively across Europe and Israel. Her abstract architectural and landscape works are preserved in numerous public institutions, including the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and The Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
