About the Artist:
Robert Baser (1908–1998) was a prominent Israeli painter and sculptor whose journey spanned continents and shaped the course of local modernism. Born in Athens, Greece, Baser immigrated to Israel in 1934 and eventually became one of the foundational figures of the famous artists' colony in Safed. Driven by a desire to break away from traditional academic styles, he became an early, influential member of the groundbreaking "New Horizons" (Ofakim Hadashim) art movement. Baser was deeply fascinated by the local Mediterranean light and landscape, capturing them through poetic, atmospheric watercolor paintings that masterfully balanced recognizable figures with modern lyrical abstraction. His innovative approach earned him widespread acclaim, leading to extensive solo and group exhibitions across Israel and Europe, including representing the country at the prestigious Venice Biennale in 1954.
