About the Artwork
This striking vertical composition is a beautiful rendition of traditional Balinese Kamasan painting, an ancient storytelling art form originating from Klungkung, Bali. The artwork is meticulously structured into three cosmological registers, reflecting the traditional Balinese view of the universe: 
 
Upper Register: Depicts the celestial realm, featuring a prominent winged deity (resembling Garuda) amidst stylised clouds.
Middle Register: Portrays the earthly realm of aristocracy and nobility, showing refined characters with delicate facial features standing by a sacred tree.
Lower Register: Illustrates the underworld or coarse realm, featuring demonic ogres alongside traditional wayang clown-servants (Panakawan) characterized by their exaggerated, expressive features.
 
The entire piece is preserved in its mid-20th-century original faux-bamboo frame and original anti-glare matte glass. The reverse retains its authentic backing and the historic gallery label from the renowned Men Fong Picture Frame Maker on Wellington Street, Hong Kong.
