About the Artist
Yehezkel Streichman (1906–1993) was a foundational master of Israeli art and a leading pioneer whose vision permanently transformed the nation's cultural landscape. Born in Lithuania, he formed his artistic foundation at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem before undergoing comprehensive classical training in Paris and Florence during the late 1920s. In 1948, alongside Joseph Zaritsky, Streichman co-founded the highly influential "New Horizons" (Ofakim Hadashim) art movement. Together, they revolutionized local painting, steering it away from regional realism toward international lyrical abstraction and a profound exploration of light and emotion. Beyond his own canvas, Streichman was a beloved educator who mentored generations of prominent Israeli artists. His immense contribution and legacy were recognized with multiple Dizengoff Prizes and the prestigious Israel Prize for Painting in 1990. Today, his masterworks are treasured in premier collections globally and nationally, including the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
