About the Artist:
Yosef Kossonogi (1908–1981) was a prominent Israeli painter whose luminous masterworks captured the unique light and fluid beauty of the local landscape. Born in Budapest to a family of Eastern European Jewish heritage, his distinctive surname reflects deep regional roots that preceded his journey to Israel. After pursuing academic art training at the Berlin Academy of Art and traveling across France, Italy, and Spain, he immigrated to Mandate Palestine in 1926. Settling in Tel Aviv, Kossonogi became a dynamic force in the evolving local scene as a founding member of the influential "Massad" artists' collective. He earned widespread renown as an absolute master of the aquarelle (watercolor) medium, celebrated for his rare ability to blend fluid figurative compositions with dreamlike lyrical abstraction. His exceptional command of atmosphere earned him the prestigious Dizengoff Prize for Painting twice, in 1944 and 1954. Today, his highly sought-after works are celebrated as benchmarks of early Israeli modernism and are held in major public collections, including the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

ציור אקוורל מקורי זה משנת 1951 מאת חתן פרס דיזנגוף יוסף קוסונוגי מתאר התקבצות מוזיקלית קצבית על רקע נוף מדברי. במרכז הקומפוציזיה מתואר נגן חליל בלבוש כחול, ומצדדיו דמויות האוחזות בכלי הקשה. בחלקו הימני העליון של הרקע משתלב קו מתאר של גמל אל תוך האופק הבהיר. היצירה מייצגת את סגנונו המובהק של האמן מאמצע המאה ה-20, המבוסס על הנחות צבע מדוללות ושקיפויות ליריות. היצירה חתומה, מצוינת במיקום ומתוארכת "1951" בכתב ידו של האמן בפינה השמאלית התחתונה.

יוסף קוסונוגי (1908–1981) היה מבכירי הציירים בישראל, אשר יצירותיו שטופות האור לכדו באופן פואטי את מהותו והשתנותו של הנוף המקומי. הוא נולד בבודפשט למשפחה יהודית בעלת שורשים עמוקים במזרח אירופה (מקורו של שם משפחתו הייחודי), ספג את עולם האמנות בנעוריו, והמשיך ללימודים באקדמיה לאמנות בברלין ולהשתלמויות בצרפת ובאיטליה. בשנת 1926 עלה לארץ ישראל והפך במהרה לכוח מניע ודינמי בסצנת האמנות העברית המתפתחת בתל אביב, בין היתר כאחד ממייסדיה של קבוצת האמנים הצעירים המשפיעה "מסד". קוסונוגי זכה לתהילה רבה ונחשב למאסטר מובהק ובלתי מעורער של מדיום האקוורל (צבעי המים). הוא ניחן ביכולת נדירה לשלב בין קומפוזיציות פיגורטיביות זורמות לבין הפשטה לירית, תוך יצירת סצנות פואטיות דמויות חלום שבהן הצורות נמסות לתוך צבע טהור וקורן. השליטה הפנומנלית שלו באור, שקיפויות ואווירה זיכתה אותו פעמיים בפרס דיזנגוף היוקרתי לציור, בשנים 1944 ו-1954. כיום, עבודותיו המבוקשות נחשבות לנכסי צאן ברזל של המודרניזם הישראלי המוקדם ושמורות באוספי קבע מוזיאליים מובילים, בהם מוזיאון ישראל ומוזיאון תל אביב לאמנות.
