About the Artist
Alexej von Jawlensky (1864–1911) was a pioneering Russian Expressionist painter who became a key figure in the European avant-garde and a core member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) movement alongside Wassily Kandinsky. Heavily influenced by Fauvism and Henri Matisse, Jawlensky rejected literal representation, choosing instead to use vibrant, contrasting colors and simplified forms to manifest an inner, spiritual truth. Throughout his career, he focused intensely on the human face, evolving from raw, emotionally charged portraits into highly abstract, geometric visages that functioned as modern objects of mystical meditation.
