About the Artwork:
This original 1836 steel engraving captures a panoramic general view of ancient Ephesus, a prominent hub of early Christianity and one of the Seven Churches of Asia. The composition highlights the historic Isa Bey mosque complex with its distinctive domes and slender minaret, enclosed by an arched stone courtyard wall. On the left foreground, two tall palm trees and a fallen ancient column fragment frame the scene. In the lower right, a small group of local figures in traditional Levant garments rest on the hillside, overlooking the vast open plains that stretch toward distant mountain ridges. Beautifully engraved by Edward Finden, this historical print provides an invaluable topographic record of the Holy Land region.
