This original 1836 steel engraving depicts the dramatic ruins of Sardis, one of the historic Seven Churches of Asia mentioned in the Book of Revelation. Drawn by celebrated marine and landscape painter Clarkson Stanfield, the composition features two massive remaining classical columns standing tall against a rugged mountain landscape under a stormy, lightning-struck sky. In the foreground, local figures rest near a rearing horse, adding a wonderful sense of scale and romantic atmosphere to the scene. This print was published in the famous work Landscape Illustrations of the Bible by Thomas Hartwell Horne.
