This historic promotional music poster features one of the most iconic and definitive photographs of the Grateful Dead, taken in 1966 by the band’s legendary longtime photographer Herb Greene. Captured at the world-famous intersection of Haight and Ashbury Streets in San Francisco—the epicenter of the 1960s counterculture movement—the striking black-and-white portrait documents the band's legendary founding five-member lineup: Jerry Garcia, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, and Bill Kreutzmann. Set just a year before the 1967 Summer of Love, the composition perfectly balances raw documentary street photography with bold, stylized red retro typography of the band's name across the lower margin.
