This authentic antique steel engraving, published circa 1836, captures a majestic topographical overview titled The Ruins of Djerash. The view depicts the monumental classical remains of ancient Gerasa (modern-day Jerash, Jordan), historically celebrated as one of the grandest provincial cities of the Decapolis under Roman rule. Meticulously drafted by British artist J. Salmon from a contextual field study, the composition highlights the ancient multi-arched stone bridge spanning the river basin in the foreground. The rolling landscape behind the bridge reveals standing Corinthian colonnades, crumbling temple structures, and public buildings set against an atmospheric sky with distant mountain peaks. The scene is animated by regional travelers on horseback crossing the historic stone bridge, alongside a small group of local figures resting on the elevated right path.
