This authentic 1836 steel engraving captures the ancient ruins at Ephesus, traditionally identified at the time of publication as the Ruins of the Temple of Diana (Artemis). The scene was developed by the noted British landscape painter James Duffield Harding, based upon an on-the-spot travel sketch by the English artist William Page. Engraved with exceptional precision by Edward Finden, the composition features prominent stone blocks, broken masonry, and ancient wall structures. In the foreground, a detailed group of regional travelers with a donkey adds local color and narrative depth. This print is plate-sourced from the publication Landscape Illustrations of the Bible compiled by Thomas Hartwell Horne and the Finden brothers.
