About the Artist
Nahum Gutman (1898–1980) was a pioneering Israeli painter, sculptor, and author, recognized as a foundational figure in early Israeli modern art. Born in Bessarabia, he immigrated to Ottoman Palestine in 1905 and studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. Moving away from rigid European academic styles, Gutman developed a distinct, luminous visual language capturing the light, landscapes, and everyday life of the burgeoning country. He was awarded the Israel Prize in 1978 for his immense contributions to Hebrew children's literature and art.
