About the Artist
Nahum Kook (1908–1978) was a prominent Jaffa-born painter and illustrator whose vibrant works occupy a unique place in the history of early Israeli modernism. As a completely self-taught (autodidact) artist, Kook developed a highly intuitive and uninhibited visual language. His early career was defined by atmospheric and expressive depictions of local Middle Eastern life, utilizing bold gouache and oil applications to capture the region’s shifting light, bustling towns, and desert landscapes. Over the decades, his style evolved beautifully, transitioning from detailed illustration to powerful, rhythmic semi-abstract and purely abstract compositions driven by rich color harmonies. His exceptional contribution to the local art scene was officially honored when he was awarded the prestigious Herman Struck Prize.
